A diesel truck engine is a tough environment. Diesels create higher compression ratios and require tighter tolerances; that's why we build diesel air filters to even higher specifications. They typically use deeper pleats in larger sizes to increase surface area for more capacity and airflow. Diesel Performance - Horsepower and Acceleration

K&N air filters were created for an environment requiring maximum horsepower and enhanced acceleration in addition to protection from the dirt and dust of off-road racing. Our OE replacement air filters generally add 1-4 horsepower, and the large performance filters on our diesel air intake systems help provide an increase of as much as 22 horsepower. We have 5 in-house dynamometers that we use to test our diesel air filters and diesel air intake systems enabling us to verify horsepower gains. Be assured, K&N will not release a diesel air intake system without a verifiable and repeatable increase in horsepower.

Our systems are built for Horsepower and added diesel performance. If we can’t increase a vehicle’s horsepower we won’t build a system for it, it’s that simple. We establish a stock baseline horsepower with our in-house dynamometers and then work to get the largest horsepower gain attainable. Our numbers are not based on the single biggest gain from one particular vehicle but are an average of runs and vehicles. Many times an identical vehicle will perform differently and we want to ensure repeatable numbers you can count on for great diesel performance. High-Flow Technology for Diesel Performance

How do we increase horsepower so consistently? You might have guessed it starts with The World’s Best Air Filter. Even a K&N OE replacement air filter is limited by the size of the original air box. Remove the air box and we’ve got plenty of room to work with. Now we can apply our High-Flow Filter Technology to a large conical open element filter, providing more surface area and as much air as a normally aspirated diesel engine can breathe. The oversize air filter also captures and holds more dirt increasing the service life before a cleaning is required (up to 100,000 miles depending on driving conditions).

Diesel Air Intake Tubes

Improving the air path between the filter and the motor is the next area of improvement. Our Diesel performance High-Flow Intake Systems incorporate rotationally molded High Density Polyethylene tubes and are black in color. Our molded Polyethylene systems offer us the most flexibility in design and the best possible horsepower numbers for added diesel performance.


Many K&N Air Intake Systems are street legal in all 50 states and include a California Air Resource Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO) number that ensures the kit has been tested to comply with emissions standards. EO numbers apply to the intake as well as the year, make and model it is being installed on. Systems with no EO number are street legal in most states but may not be used on emissions controlled vehicles in the state of California.

Powerstroke Diesel Air Filters

2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 6.7 liter Powerstroke trucks have a high-flow performance diesel air filter option, 33-5010, that's designed to produce more power and torque. 2008, 2009 and 2010 6.4 liter Powerstroke diesel truck owners can add performance with K&N's high flow diesel air filter E-0785. The oval shape of this diesel air filter allows it to drop directly into the unique factory airbox of your diesel truck's engine compartment. The 2003 - 2007 6.0 liter Powerstroke diesel's presented a unique challenge, with a cartridge style OE air filter that’s both expensive and difficult to replace. Our engineers built an entire new air box with a deep oval filter that flows more air and provides an increase in power (part number E-0780).

Duramax Diesel Air Filters

2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Duramax diesel air filter 33-2466 is designed to add horsepower and torque while offering excellent protection for your truck. This panel style diesel air filter will fit into the factory airbox without cutting or trimming. The 2006 - 2010 Duramax diesel air filter (part number E-0781) required a strong metal cage. We achieved higher air flow and more power over the OE air filter.

Cummins Diesel Air Filters

Owners of 2013, 2014 and 2015 6.7L diesel trucks can always use the added performance the'll get with K&N diesel air filter 33-5005. 2010, 2011 and 2012 6.7 liter Cummins diesel's use K&N diesel air filter E-0787 for great performance and filtration. The 2007 and 2009 6.7L Cummins gain a lifetime of diesel performance with K&N's high-flow air filter (part number E-0784). The 2003 - 2007 5.9L Cummins air filter (part number E-0776) is a good example of our design capabilities. By utilizing the entire depth of the OE air box we replace the flat OE panel filter with a cube style filter flowing significantly more air and providing extra power.

Diesel Engine Protection, Filtration, and 6 Layers of Cotton Gauze

Anyone can flow more air. The trick is to flow more air safely. In our opinion we hit the sweet spot - an optimal blend of high air flow, filtration efficiency, durability and dust capacity. We take filtration seriously. K&N Diesel Air Filter media has been tested both in-house and by independent labs using the ISO5011 test developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. In addition we test many of our filters both in and out of the OE airbox ensuring proper fit and function. K&N diesel air filters are made with 6 layers of cotton gauze and are built to withstand the higher volume of airflow generated by diesel motors.

The Importance of Air Filter Oil

The K&N air filters made for diesel trucks are made of 6 layers of cotton gauze sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens. The cotton is treated with a specially formulated grade of oil causing tackiness throughout the cotton’s microscopic strands. The nature of the cotton allows high volumes of airflow, and when combined with the tackiness of the oil it creates a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection. In contrast, most other media can not maintain the same balance of airflow and filtration throughout the filter's life without sacrificing one or the other. K&N uses independent laboratories to help ensure that our products meet or exceed your high performance and high filtration demands. Better yet, we conduct our own testing at our own state-of-the-art in-house testing laboratory. K&N’s dedication to providing a first-class air filter can also be seen outside the testing laboratory. Consider that K&N has sold more than 20 million air filters since 1969, over 500,000 of them specifically for diesels.
