The weekend started off rough when Jacob spun and hit the barriers during a Friday morning practice session. He spent much of the day repairing extensive axle and bearing damage in preparation for Saturday’s race. “Jacob’s practice crash was a real mess,” said Jacob’s father Richard Pearlman. “There was dirt everywhere. Our K&N Air Filter was the easiest item to service on the kart. We were able to quickly clean it and oil it. It was race ready for Saturday. Other air filters would have ended up in the trash.”

On Saturday, JP was offered a sponsored ride for the HPV-4 Jr. class. The family originally intended for Jacob to only race the HPV-2 class. “JP did not have a chance to practice in the HPV-4 kart, but still managed to qualify in 3rd place,” said Pearlman. “At the drop of the green flag JP quickly moved up to 2nd place.” He held his position for one lap until a crash occurred.

“I knew there was something wrong coming out of the first turn of the race,” said Jacob Pearlman. “The kart was very unstable and I was fighting to keep up with the leader. I saw a small piece of metal pass by my head and briefly thought that it was part of the brakes. The kart suddenly whipped hard to the right as the left rear wheel came off the hub. It would not be ready for the main event.”

JP worked on the HPV-4 Jr. while Richard Pearlman prepped their Birel R-30 for the HPV-2 heat race.

The 14-year-old from Carlsbad, California started at the back of the field for the HPV-4 Jr. main event. JP was racing for a win in a kart he had driven for a total of only four laps. He was in the lead by the time the field completed the 2nd lap, before the motor on his kart began to fade. JP ran in the back of the field for several laps until his motor came back to life. He moved up to the front of the line and caught the leader, but the laps ran out as the checkered flag flew. JP was just .05 seconds behind the winner. In the HPV-2 main event, JP finished in 8th place.

JP will race at California Speedway in Round 4 of the Los Angeles Kart Club’s 2007 season this weekend.
