2006 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Champ Watches from the Sidelines

Jason Crump missed his place in the Latvian Grand Prix final and was forced to watch from the sidelines as others battled for the silver and bronze medals. The 2006 World Champion said he was disappointed with his performance in the semi-final.

Crump had enough points to win the gold in the 2006 World Speedway Championship at Prague a few weeks ago, but still participates in the final rounds. “I missed the start and it was all over,” said the Australian racer. “I tried to recover, but it was always going to be difficult to come from behind.”

American Greg Hancock charged to his first Grand Prix victory in two years with an inside passing move over Sweden’s Antonio Lindback on the penultimate lap of the final. Hancock added 25 points to his total virtually guaranteeing him the silver medal in the championship with just one Grand Prix remaining.

“Congratulations to Greg, he made a great move and deserved that win,” said Crump. “There are four or five riders still battling it out for the silver and bronze medals in the championship and there is no room for error. I might have relaxed a little and got caught out this time.”

The 31-year-old double World Champion said the last round at Poland will be tough. The battle will be on for the riders down the order to stay in the top eight for an automatic entry into next years World Championship.

Round 10 of the 2006 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship takes place at Bydgoszcz, Poland on September 23rd.
