The ending of the first X Games Rally was sensational for the audience and three team members of Subaru Rally Team USA. Travis Pastrana edged out teammate Colin McRae to win gold. But all eyes were on McRae after he rolled his car on the final jump of the course, ripped the front tire off the rim and smashed the entire front end. The car rolled but landed on its wheels and McRae drove to the finish for the Silver. Driver Ken Block netted the bronze and the team occupied all three podium spots.

“It was tough competing against their light weight cars especially made for the event,” said K&N Engineering Subaru driver Lauchlin O’Sullivan. “The team won all three medals, but they didn’t get us in the dirt, they got us on the tarmac.”

O’Sullivan took 4th only 1.27 seconds away from the medal. Earlier in the week O’Sullivan placed 4th at the inaugural rally at Hungry Valley SVRA Park in Gorman, California. McRae and Pastrana tied going into the final stages of the competition August 5th at California’s Home Depot Center.

“We had two flat tires and broke an upright (in Gorman),” said O’Sullivan. “When our suspension link cracked we could not get the car to steer straight in the last stages of competition. Without those problems we might have won a medal against the top team.”

The K&N Subaru ran in some of the harshest motorsports conditions and one of the toughest fields assembled in U.S. Rally history. “There was lots of dust and sand,” said O’Sullivan. “We pulled our K&N Filter once and cleaned it, but it did not need to be cleaned at all. A lot of other engines without K&N Filters had trouble breathing. When I first started rallying we purchased K&N Filters because they are reusable and affordable. Now we use them for performance.”

O’Sullivan said he hopes 4th place gets him an invitation to the X Games in 2007. “Being at this year’s X Games was incredible,” he said. “We are on the ground floor of a sport that is skyrocketing in popularity.”
