The Ford Focus Midget Series is usually a 20 to 25 lap event, but on June 3rd the USAC California Ford Focus Pavement Series at Madera Speedway was a 30-lap event. Racer Laura Poorter, 17, was prepared for the extra laps with a strategy. The Holland native competes for K&N Engineering, Inc. in the Ford Focus Midget Series.

Charles Maier, K&N Sports Marketing Director suggested she go easy at the start of the feature. “In the beginning, everyone drives a little crazy to try and get into first position,” said Laura. “During the first 20 laps I was very cautious and people around me were doing crazy things.”

Driving at the right level of aggression is important in the Ford Focus Midget Series. Laura drove karts in Europe where competitors are very aggressive, sometimes dangerous. “In America, it’s not as aggressive as it is in Europe but it’s somewhere in-between,” Laura said. “I’ve figured out where I need to be.”

Laura started the Feature Event at Madera from 9th position, dropped down to 15th then started climbing back up. “My car was good, my times were good and I began to take over positions,” she said. “Then with 5 laps to go I was 5th, but I wanted to be third.”

The race ended with Laura in 5th position out of 19 drivers. She beat the two other females in the race. “I’m very happy with the race,” said Laura. She is 9th in the California Ford Focus Pavement Standings going into a June 17 race at Altamont Motorsports Park.
