Terry McCarl Drives Friends Back-up Car At Huset's Speedway and Walks Away Victorious
- Sep 1, 2011
As fate would have it, all plans were changed when his best friend, Lynton Jeffrey, asked McCarl to man his back up car in the 410 Outlaw Sprint cars. Within no time, the driver had recruited friend, Justin Boese, as his crew chief, and was lining up to compete in his heat. When asked if he were surprised when Jeffrey asked him to drive, McCarl stated, "It wasn't a surprise, he's my best friend, but it was really nice of him to ask me to do it." "We did it at the last moment, and you're getting into someone else's car. It's not your seat and it's not your pedals. You know, you kind of get a feeling for your car, and other people's cars kind of feel strange to you at first. His car felt really good right off the bat, with the Eagle Chassis, and was really fast. It was kind of a fairytale story with a happy ending." When asked if he must get mentally prepared for a race, the driver said, "No not really. That's what I do and I've been driving for a long time. Huset's is a track that I know well. Once I get in the car, I'm pretty well ready to go." Finishing fifth in his heat, McCarl lined up third in the feature even better acquainted with Jeffrey's car. "When the waving of the green flag deemed the 35 lap event underway, McCarl found himself in a four car battle for the first thirty three laps. In third place with only two laps to go, the driver made his move, taking the lead. "It was one heck of a race," explained McCarl. "It was a four car battle; weaving in and out of traffic, banging the fence and banging into each other. You could have thrown a blanket over the four of us throughout the whole race. It was a great race for the fans." Once taking the lead, Terry McCarl continued to pull away from the other drivers and lead by six car lengths upon taking the checkered flag. "It was a huge win for me, because I've been having a bit of a difficult year" explained the driver. "Again, it was kind of like a fairytale story. It was at the last moment, we got there kind of late, and it wasn't my car. For me, personally as a driver, confidence wise, it wouldn't be below a ten." Of course, as do all race car drivers, Terry McCarl and Lynton Jeffrey more than likely don't agree on everything, as that's one of the draws of the sport making it interesting and fun to follow. That said though, Jeffrey and McCarl obviously do see eye to eye on the importance and performance of K&N products. When asked if K&N products could be partly credited for his win, the driver said, "You've got to give some credit to K&N for all of my wins, because of the performance of my engines. Not only for just my wins," he continued. "Throughout my career I have been known to be a very good qualifier and very fast with great engines. I've had very few engine failures, knock on wood, throughout my entire career, and I think you definitely can attribute a lot of that to K&N filters." Of course, as a veteran driver, Terry McCarl understands the importance of his sponsors and fans. When asked if there was a message that he would like to relay to them, referring to T-Mac Motorsports Inc. the driver said, "Keep following us. Both of my sons are really coming on strong, and we're building our team to be a contender. I look for our team during the rest of the season to be strong and be contenders everywhere we go, and next season will be even better."
