K&N is offering the VF1013 cabin air filter for 2013 through 2017 Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S cars as well as 2007 through 2008 Honda Fits. The Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S are part of the Toyota 86 Series that was developed in a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru, but is solely manufactured by Subaru. Introduced in January 2012, the rear wheel drive, front engine 2-door sports coupe includes a 2.0-liter 4U-GSE/FA20 H4 naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine that features Toyota’s D-4S injection system that uses direct and port fuel injection. Power output has been rated at 200-horsepower (149 kW; 203 PS) at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft (205 N-m) of torque at 6,000 rpm. Two 6-speed transmissions are available –- an in-house developed Toyota TL70 manual gearbox and an Aisin-Warner A960E, which is a modified version of the transmission used on the Lexus IS 250. The automatic transmission includes software that has been engineered to make it imitate the response of a dual-clutch gearbox. This transmission has three different modes –- Sport, Snow, and Normal. A torque sensing limited slip differential is standard. Introduced in 2001, the Honda Fit is a five-door, front engine, front-wheel drive subcompact car that is sold Japan, Europe, China, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Chile, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines (as the Honda Jazz). The cabin air filter is electrostatically charged to catch and hold most mold, mildew, pollen, spores, fungus and germs. K&N also offers the 99-6000 cabin filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to clean and refresh all K&N cabin air filters. The cleaner removes dirt and road grime as well as the trapped mold, mildew, fungus, allergens, bacteria and other unhealthy debris and increases the electrostatic properties of the filter so that it can be reused. The filter features a fan-folded, single layer of thermally bonded nonwoven synthetic material with wire screening held in a molded urethane frame. As air flows through the K&N cabin air filter, dirt and allergen particles are caught in the synthetic fibers and held by the electrostatic charge. The design assures increased airflow, even as the filter gets dirty. K&N cabin air filters outperform factory cabin filters because the factory filter uses folded paper or some combination of paper and fibers. Often rectangular or nearly square in shape, the factory filter serves only as a physical barrier to capture the unhealthy contaminants and only reduces the number of particles that gets into the car’s ventilation and air conditioning system. The contaminants that the factory filter does catch and hold accumulates on the surface and ultimately cakes up, forming a layer of filth that restricts the flow of air coming into the cabin. These filters are not designed to be washed and must be discarded after they capture such an overabundance of contaminants, they can no longer perform as a filter. Factory cabin air filters generally need to be replaced at least once a year. However, since the K&N cabin air filters can be cleaned and recharged, they can be reused so they will last for as long as you own your car.
