A Canadian comedian recently stated he thought that people in the United States viewed Canada as their attic - we don't go up there very often, but when we do, we're surprised by how many cool things are there.

Indeed, the Canadian racing scene rocks. Take for example the Grand Prix de Valcourt in Saint-Romuald, Québec, a 5/8-mile man made ice speedway that hosts snowmobile ice racing, snowcross racing, moto-ice racing and now ATV racing.

More than 10,000 diehard fans recently watched as seven time Canadian ATV Champion, Richard Pelchat, piloted his Can-Am DS450 at speeds approaching 80 mph along the frigid straightaway. All in all, 15 of the best quad racers around were invited to the event, some of them ice-racing specialists, but when the frosty checkered flag fell, it was first-timer Pelchat that stiffed the competition.

"It was the first time in like ten years that they have put an ATV race at the Grand Prix de Valcourt. So it was a first for me there. It was just awesome to race in front of all the BRP/Can-Am people," commented Pelchat. "I made sure my Can-Am DS450 had the best possible setup and all the power we could get out of it, because horsepower would be the name of the game. I actually made a special drag style pipe that ran out on the side of the nerf bars, it was screaming loud."

"For the Valcourt race we had a straight open air-box, so we used a pre-charger on top of the K&N filters to prevent any ice or frost from hurting the power. It worked perfect," adds Pelchat.

Pelchat is a factory Can-Am racer and Valcourt is the hometown of Can-Am, so he focused that particular pressure to help motivate him. Pelchat is new to the ice-racing world, having only raced a couple of smaller events earlier this winter, but the Dominator found he was immediately competitive on the slippery surface.

What's the next challenge for Pelchat? "Things are getting rolling here at my shop, my MX race bike will be ready pretty soon. I am leaving at the end of March to go train, and then in May, it is time to go racing."
