Although it's based on the current Mazda Miata, the new Fiat 124 Spider differs in several ways. First off, it looks more sophisticated, with an upright grille and a better looking rear end treatment. It's got more luxurious upholstery, more soft touch-points, and to cut down on road noise inside the cabin, more sound deadening material and a thicker acoustic windshield were added. But the biggest difference lies under the hood, where a turbocharged 1.4L replaces the MX-5's naturally aspirated 4-cyl engines. The Fiat 1.4L MultiAir engine uses a unique variable valve timing system to precisely control the flow of intake air being forced in by the turbo.
