The K&N 69-6020TS Typhoon cold-air intake system is a free-flowing, mandrel-bent aluminum tube air induction system designed to fit some Mazda Protege, Protege5 and MP3 models. The restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing are replaced by the K&N Typhoon cold-air intake which is designed to pull in outside air and dramatically reduce air flow restriction by smoothing and straightening air flow. This allows your engine to inhale a larger amount of air than the factory air intake. More air means more usable power and acceleration throughout the engine’s RPM range. The 69-6020TS cold-air intake consists of a black rubber topped K&N high-flow air filter that mounts near the driver side wheel well directing outside air through free-flowing aluminum tubing into a short ram induction tube that delivers high volumes of clean air into the engine’s throttle body for a guaranteed power gain. The intake tubes have an attractive silver powder-coat finish that's made to last. The cold-air intake system accommodates the factory mass air sensor and crank case vent hose. The oversized cone shaped air filter comes with a water repellent DryCharger filter wrap to protect the filter from moisture. The air filter can be used for up to 100,000 miles before servicing is needed depending on driving conditions. This cold air intake is relatively easy to install usually in 90 minutes or less using existing factory mounting points. The tools needed are a couple of screwdrivers, pliers, a ratchet set and an Allen wrench. Some Typhoon air intakes are not legal for sale or use in California and other states adopting California emission standards while others are CARB exempt and 50 state legal. Check the K&N catalog or website for vehicle applications and specific CARB status for each vehicle and air intake.

I have a 1995 Mazda protege with the 1.5L engine. I have had the same dirty air filter since last August 2008, and was noticing that my Mazda's performance was failing over time. I did a tune up last week and decided to change that dingy paper filter. I bought the K&N filter for 35 dollars, which is great, because two disposables would cost at least 30 dollars. All I can say is AMAZING!! I feel the response, and no more hesitant acceleration. My mileage is noticeably better as well although I haven't had time to calculate the numbers yet. I thought it was my tranny before, but it was a lack of good filtering and airflow. I would highly recommend this product to tuners, and drivers looking for that extra couple MPG.
If I buy another car, its K&N all the way.

My wife bought a 2002 Mazda Protege5 new . It has had a noticable pause in power between shifts ever since new , now has 27000 mi. Took back to dealer three times for this with no improvement. Their explanation was the computer did this to soften shifts (130 HP. Ha-Ha). Our son recommended the drop in K&N, he has one in a 07 Maxima. I put one in the Mazda and immediately noticed the hesitation was completely gone plus the acceleration is greatly improved, she now gets about 415 mi. to a tank, before she was averaging 380. Did not tell my wife what I had done so I could see if she noticed, she did. The first time she used her car she called me excited and said her car had stopped stumbling, then I told her what I did. Thanks K&N.

I was an auto mechanic for 3 years, so needless to say my family members always ask me questions about their cars. I replaced the (disposable paper brand) air filter in my sister's 1994 Mazda Protege with a K&N one without telling her. A few days later she told me her car accelerated quicker from a dead stop and asked me why it did that all of the sudden. I told her I replaced her air filter with a high performace one. As a former auto mechanic, I swear by K&N filters and intake kits and would never install anything else on my cars.

Thanks K&N!
