Mix stadium racing with technical rock crawling, combine more rocks, steeper climbs and double jumps and it adds up to XRRA (extreme) Rock Racing. One of the fastest tracks on the circuit is in Colorado Springs at the RAM Off-road Park.

The competition is fast paced and tough. Drivers have to stay within the confines of the course for straight forward timed runs. The challenge however, is to finish. Seconds seem to make a difference at the end of the day when a driver’s split second decision to throttle or plow through determines the outcome.

Colorado Springs natives Brad and Roger Lovell raced in front of a huge hometown crowd last weekend. “This was the first time that Roger and I have raced each other in the same event,” said Brad Lovell. “I raced first and when the clock started I left the gates solo. I weaved through the course in eerie silence until I crashed down on a rock face, slamming the front end of my modified class rockcrawler into the dirt. The impact caused an electrical malfunction that was affecting the engine. Every time I bumped into something, it sputtered. I lost a couple of seconds.”

Roger Lovell was next on the opposing course and launched his USA Ranger with K&N Engineering products into the course. Lovell made great time until he reached a technical sandstone climb. He was unable to make it over the first time, backed up and hit it again at full force. “The rear bounced up violently and snapped as soon as he landed,” said Lovell. “He broke the axle and my brother’s day was over as fast as it started.”

The Lovell’s stripped the electrical parts off the broken car for their FABTECH Ranger with K&N Engineering products. “I lined up for our second race with Roger as my co-driver,” said Lovell. “I took a stab at the sandstone climb and from foot to the floor we shot up the climb and raced towards the double finish. I didn’t lift my foot until we reached the exit. The effort shaved fractions of a second off our time, but we landed sideways and cart-wheeled the truck though the finish line.”

During the third race, Lovell throttled through the jump section and nearly hit some boulders. “I gassed and saved it,” he said. “We snaked through the boulders as Roger steered the rear axle with the cutting break. My brother controlled the back of the Ranger and I controlled the front. We were lightening fast through the turns and as we jumped across the finish line I knew we made good time.”

The Lovell brothers were 5th place in a field of 42, only 11 seconds away from 3rd place. “There is a lot of silt and fine dust on these courses,” said Lovell. “K&N Filters keep the debris out of our engines and our sensors do not clog up. There is also a slight taper to give us the clearance and flexibility we need in this kind of competition.”

Next up for Team Lovell is the WE-Rock Finals at Donner, California on June 29th. The brothers have a 3 point lead on the series and hope to nail a championship.nt.”
