Gittin quit his day job two weeks ago to compete full time as a professional drifter in his 2005 Mustang. “That steady paycheck was like a security blanket,” said Gittin. “I came to the realization that if I want to continue to follow my dreams as a profession driver, I had to take the plunge. I’m not nervous about it because I love driving. I don’t want to be behind a desk again.”

Drifting is about controlling a car at high speeds as it slides sideways on a closed and marked course. “It is precision driving beyond the limits of tire traction,” said Gittin. “Cars get mere inches from each other as drivers try to out perform each other on the course. As our speeds increase, sometimes up to 100 mph, the more technical things can get.”

Gittin has used K&N Engineering products since he was 16-years-old. “I saw all the research and knew K&N Air and Oil Filters were right for me,” he said. “However, my professional relationship with K&N began about 4-years-ago. I was moving up the ranks in drifting and walked over to the K&N booth at an event. I introduced myself to K&N’s James Yim, asked for a sponsorship and the rest is history.”

“I took a K&N Filter out of the K&N booth and put it on Vaughn’s car the first day,” said Yim. “We supported Vaughn at the beginning of his drifting career and each subsequent year our relationship grows stronger.”

In 2006, Gittin ranked 4th overall. “I hope we can get a championship in 2007,” he said. “Like any other driver I’m very hard on myself. I want to be first.”

Gittin has a new mechanic for the 2007 Drifting Season. “I now have someone to translate between me and the car,” he said. “I think this year will be very good for us. I’m also very happy to be associated with K&N. Their support is a dream that has come true for me.”
