By now, you have probably heard about city cars. They are small economical automobiles engineered to drive in the highly congested environment of cities.

European automakers Vauxhall and Opel, both subsidiaries of General Motors, are offering models that are defined as city cars. They include the Vauxhall Viva and the Opel Karl, which are related to the Chevrolet Spark.

The 2015 Vauxhall Viva is about 3.68-meters long, can accommodate five passengers, and comes in four trims –- the SE, SE Air Con, SE ecoFLEX and the SL. Vauxhall claims that is has a fuel economy rating of 62.8-mpg.

A naturally aspirated General Motors 1.0-liter three-cylinder Ecotec engine powers the Viva, delivers 74-bhp and is integrated with a 5-speed gearbox. The chassis features electronic stability control, traction control and hill start assistance. The power steering includes a City Mode, which is engineered to reduce driver effort.

The air conditioner is standard on the SE. The SE and ecoFLEX version have a front and rear spoiler. Other standard equipment includes low-rolling resistance tires that help it accomplish its fuel economy rating. The SL models include electronic climate control, leather steering wheel and 15-inch wheels. Options include heated seats, parking sensors, glass electric-sliding sunroof, land departure warning, park assist, cruise control, foglights, and General Motors’ IntelliLink multimedia system, which integrates with Apple and Android smartphones.

A new 1.0-liter three-cylinder ECOTEC engine that achieves 65.7-mpg combined powers the 2016 version of the Viva. It retains the IntelliLink found on the 2015 model, but now includes OnStar.

The 2016 model includes two trim levels –- SE and SL. The SE includes Anti-lock Braking; Electronic Stability with Traction Control; Driver, front-passenger and curtain air bags; tire pressure monitoring system, lane departure warning, Perimeter alarm system and electronic engine deadlock imobilizer; speed-sensitive powered-assisted steering; cruise-control with speed limiter; multi-function trip computer; tilt steering column; 60/40 split-folding rear seat back and base; and 15-inch wheels.

The SE ecoFLEX model includes all features of the SE as well as front and extended rear spoiler and ultra-low rolling resistance tires. The SL model includes the features of the SE as well as electronic climate control, USB audio connection, Bluetooth music streaming and mobile phone portal, six speakers, dark-tinted rear window, and 15-inch alloy wheels.

The 2016 Opel Karl hatchback is 144.9 inches long, which is two-tenths of an inch longer than the 2015 model with a wheelbase that is 0.4-inches longer than the 2017 Spark. The cargo space below the hatchback door is 32-cubic feet. A 1.0-liter turbocharged Ecotec three-cylinder engine powers the vehicle and delivers 74-horsepower. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The 2016 Chevrolet Spark is a front-drive city car that is powered by a 1.4-liter I-4 engine that generates 98-hp at 6200 rpm and is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission. It has an EPA fuel economy rating of 30-mpg city and 41-mpg highway. It comes with a new LCD instrument panel and a new MyLink infotainment system with smartphone-like controls and a 7-inch touchscreen. A number of accessory packages are available, which permits the buyer to customize the vehicle.

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark is powered by the same engine and includes the same features as the 2016 model and achieves the same EPA fuel economy rating. Four styles are available –- LS Manual, LS CVT, ILT Manual, and ILT CVT.

The K&N 33-5043 washable and reusable replacement air filter is designed to be used in the 2017 Chevrolet Spark and the 2016 and 2015 Vauxhall Viva, Opel Karl, and Chevrolet Spark.

The air filter media is constructed with four layers of cotton gauze that has been treated with a special grade of filter oil that makes it so tacky, it will capture and hold particles for up to 50,000 miles before it needs cleaning, depending on driving conditions.

K&N offers an air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to cleanse the filter. Once cleaned, the filter can be reused until another 50,000 miles. As long as the filter is cleaned properly when it is supposed to be, it can be reused over and over again.

Tests have confirmed that the air filter achieves an overall filtration efficiency in the range of 96% to 99% and it is designed to boost horsepower and acceleration to the engine because it delivers 50% more airflow.

Paper filters cannot deliver the same kind of airflow as K&N oil treated cotton gauze air filters because the paper filter must be thick or must be tightly compressed and dense in order to achieve the minimum filtration standards. For the paper filters to achieve adequate filtration, they must be more restrictive to airflow by design.

K&N is so sure of the performance capability of the 33-5043 replacement air filter, it backs it with a Million Mile Limited Warranty®. The filter is guaranteed to perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without the need for replacement.

The K&N 33-5043 replacement air filter is designed to be used on the following vehicles:
