The K&N 33-3043 replacement air filter will improve horsepower and acceleration and work with OEM vehicle electronics.
Defined as a city car with a total length of only 98.4-inches (2.5 meters), about the width of a regular parking space, the Smart Fortwo is a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-seat hatchback that is manufactured by the Smart division of Daimler AG. It was first introduced in 1998.
K&N ships the 33-3043 filter oiled and ready to install right out of the box.
The first and second-generation models include a computer-controlled clutch as part of its automated manual transmission, eliminating the need for a clutch pedal. A 599 cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine powered the first generation model and came in three options –- 45-horsepower, 51-horsepower, and 61-horsepower. The engine displacement was increased to 698 cc in 2002 that included two versions –- a 50-horsepower and a 61-horsepower. A 799 cc turbo-diesel engine was also available.
A steel hemispherical safety cell protects the passengers if the car is involved in an accident. In 2002, the first generation model was placed into the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art and is the only vehicle in the collection that is still being produced.
In 2007, the second generation Fortwo had a 999 cc I-3 Mitsubishi 3B2 normally aspirated, turbo, and diesel engines. U.S.-rated fuel economy was 54.7 mpg for the 1.0 liter, 48 mpg for the turbo, and 71.3 mpg for the diesel.
In 2008, the Fortwo received the top overall rating of "Good" in both the front and side crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The third generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2014 and was a co-development project between Smart and Renault. It shares the same platform and engines with the third generation Renault Twingo. Two 3-cylinder engines are available to power the vehicle –- a 1.0-liter that produces 71 bhp and 67 lb-ft of torque and a turbocharged 0.9-liter that generates 89 bhp and 100 lb-ft of torque.
The car is sold in Australia, China, Japan, Canada, and the United States.
K&N offers the 33-3043 replacement and reusable air filter for 2014, 2015 and 2016 Smart Fortwo and Renault Twingo models. The air filter provides 50 percent more airflow to enhance acceleration, and torque, fits into the existing factory air box, and is combatable with the factory vehicle electronics.
The filter includes multiple layers of cotton gauze media placed between two aluminum wire screens. The cotton media is treated with a specially formulated grade of filter oil that causes the cotton strands to become very tacky so that they can catch impurities and hold them until the next cleaning.
K&N offers the 99-5000 air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to clean the filter so it can perform for another 50,000 miles (depending on driving conditions). The kit includes cleaner and air filter oil and restores the air filter's airflow efficiency.
K&N is so sure of the reliability of the filter that it offers a Million Mile Limited Warranty.
