The Bavarian Motor Works, more commonly known as BMW, was founded in 1916 and manufactures luxury cars, including plug-in electric models, as well as motorcycles. The engines of these cars should be able to breath the best air possible, and thanks to the K&N 33-3042 replacement air filter, they can do just that.

Originally an aircraft engine manufacturer, it was forced to give that up by the terms of the Versailles Treaty that ended World War I. As restrictions of the treaty started to be lifted, the company began to manufacture motorcycles in 1923 and automobiles starting in 1928.

BMW negotiated a license with British automaker Austin Motor Company in 1928 to manufacture its first car, the Dixi, which was based on the Austin 7.

With the ending of the license with Austin in 1932, BMW wanted to produce its own vehicle and enlisted the help of German engineer Josef Ganz. The result was the BMW AM1, a small car with a front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, and independent wheel suspension with swing axles. By 1933, BMW began production on six-cylinder cars.

During World War II the company constructed aircraft engines for the Third Reich. After the war it made pots, pans, and bicycles until 1948 when it started to make motorcycles again and later returned to manufacturing automobiles.

In the late 1950s, the automotive division of the company was experiencing financial problems and shareholders decided that it should pursue the manufacturing of economy cars. It acquired the rights to produce the Italian Iso Isetta. A modified BMW motorcycle engine was used to power the vehicle. The model was successful enough to help BMW to recover.

Later the company produced the 700, a small car with an air-cooled, rear-mounted 697 cc boxer modified motorcycle engine; the 1500, a compact sedan with front disc brakes and four-wheel independent suspension; and the 1600 and 1800, which started the 02 series that included the 2002 that was offered until 1976 when the BMW 3 Series was created to replace it.

By 1963 BMW was fiscally stable and was able to pay its shareholders dividends for the first time since World War II.

Automobile importer Max Hoffman convinced BMW to produce a roadster for the U.S. market in 1954. It was an offshoot of the BMW 501 and 502 and Hoffman planned that the model would fill the gap in the U.S. market between the expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL and the Triumph and MG sports cars.

The 507 debuted at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City in the summer of 1955 and production began in November 1956. Hoffman intended the car to sell for $5,000. However, due to high production costs it was initially offered in the United States for a price of $9,000 and ultimately $10,500. Although many American celebrities including Elvis Presley purchased the car, it was too expensive for the market. The 507 proved to be a disaster for BMW and forced the company to the edge of bankruptcy. Production of the car was stopped in late 1959 after only 252 were built.

BMW of North America was created in 1975 as the United States importer of BMW luxury cars. Today, the German manufacturer is the top selling luxury brand in the United States and the 11th most valuable car brand worldwide.

Owners of BMWs need to take steps to assure that their “Ultimate Driving Machine” is running at optimum performance. K&N 33-3042 replacement air filters can ensure that is the case.

K&N air filters are more complex than paper filters. They feature multiple layers of oiled cotton fabric that capture impurities and dirt particles in the air. The impurities actually cling to the fibers of the filter and become a part of the filtering media helping to stop more impurities down the road.  Due to the design of the filter, it is capable of retaining a significant amount more dirt per square inch than a paper filter.

As a result, the air filter is designed to boost the horsepower and acceleration of the vehicle and preserve a high airflow with exceptional filtration.  The filter can last for up to 50,000 miles, depending on driving conditions, before it needs to be cleaned.

K&N offers the K&N 99-5000 air filter cleaning kit that will rejuvenate the air filter so that it can be used again for another 50,000 miles until the next cleaning. Since the air filter can be used over and over again it may be the last air filter you buy.
