The Mitsubishi Lancer has been in production since 1973 and has served as the platform for the infamous Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution for decades. The model has worn different names around the globe, including the Dodge/Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant, Eagle Summit, and Mitsubishi Mirage. However, it wasn’t until the early 2000’s that Mitsubishi marketed the car as the Lancer in the United States. This was due in part to Mitsubishi’s plans to finally export the eighth generation Lancer Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had with the Mitsubishi EVO’s top rival, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

The current generation Mitsubishi Lancer was released in North America for 2008 and will probably be the final generation Lancer, and Lancer Evolution to be produced. 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 non-turbo Mitsubishi Lancer DE, ES, and ES-Sport models are powered by a 2.0-liter 4B11 engine. While it shares the same basic architecture as the 4B11T engine used in the Lancer EVO X, it makes about half as much horsepower. Beginning in 2009 Mitsubishi began to offer a larger 2.4-liter 4B12 engine in Lancer GTS models providing slightly more horsepower and torque than the 2.0L base model Lancers.
