The Formula Xtreme race was a close AMA championship road racing series. Hayes, Jason DiSalvo and Eric Bostrom all had a great shot at taking the title. Hayes his second AMA title by running one of the best races of his career.

Hayes rode an Erion Racing Honda CBR600RR-based bike to a 2.355-second margin of victory over Yamaha’s Bostrom. When it was all over, they were separated by only seven points, 358-351.

“This was a major accomplishment,” said Kevin Erion, owner of Team Erion. “It was a big challenge to keep the championship in the Honda family. The bottom line is we won and we beat Yamaha.”

Yamaha made a major push in the class this year with Bostrom and DiSalvo. Erion Racing Honda stayed in the game all season and emerged as the top team. Yamaha is a full factory team with a lot of money, said Erion. “They come into every race with a huge economic advantage. If we spend $1,000,000 they spend $6,000,000.”

Erion Racing uses K&N Engineering’s Performance Replacement Air Filters. “The K&N Filters work great,” said Erion. “With K&N we have a performance advantage. We have seen performance gains on our dynamometer, up to a 2 hp gain with K&N. Anytime we can gain horsepower with K&N it’s cost effective for our team.”

Hayes wins in 2006 put him 10th on the all-time Formula Xtreme wins list. The title was the third straight for Honda in Formula Xtreme and the seventh for Honda overall.

“We are on our way to Daytona in two weeks,” said Erion. “We going to test a brand new Honda slated for release in January. We have to get it ready for the start of the next season.”
