The UK National Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in the heart of Northamptonshire, England was packed in October. The Nostalgia Fuel Altered Association Teams were looking forward to rounding off the season.
In the first round Frank Bennett needed the points to close the gap on Clayton Round. On the green, Tony Betts recorded 1.058 at sixty feet and 4.33 at the eighth. Bennett was chasing hard with a 1.139 at sixty feet and 4.772 at half track. Betts then lost a valve seat and piston. Bennett steamed by the Nitro car to a 7.46/181.36 to take the win and the points.
On Sunday, Clayton Round successfully defended his 2005 title, and Bennett racing took second.
Frank Bennett's NFAA Topolino
Frank Bennett purchased his first race car in 1982. “We raced it as Phantasm for many successful years,” said Frank’s son Luke Bennett. “We then bought a replica 1932 Fiat Topolino. It has a fiber glass body covering a full chrome moly 125 inch wheel base. The engine is a Keith Black 511 cubic inch (8.4L) big block Chevy. It was imported from Miami, Florida as a methanol Funny Car.”
Bennett’s Drag Racing Team had a good season, winning the Nostalgia Nationals and Hot Rod Drags in Quickest Supercharged Outlaw. The team is the NFAA 2006 Runner up and holds the record for 3rd fastest MPH for Methanol Powered Altered in Europe.
