IHRA World Championship is Possible for Bayou Boys Slate Cummings
Slate Cummings has a real shot at this season’s IHRA World Championship. The driver of the “Bayou Boys” Cummings Motorsports, Moser Engineering backed racing team bolstered his national point total with an IHRA Mr. Gasket Pro-Am victory at Tri-State Dragway.
Cummings was driving his Mullis Chassis by Forrester dragster. “It’s just like anything else,” said the Louisiana native. “I had a great car, and I drove well when I had to, but it’s so competitive out here. I was fortunate to have a couple rounds fall my way, and that’s what has to happen to get the trophy.

Cummings was excellent on the starting line throughout eliminations at Tri-State, with a .002 reaction time in the final round opposite Division 3 runner John Hickman. Cummings slowed to a 5.769 on the 5.70 index, but came away with the hardware when Hickman broke out by a .001: 5.699 on the 5.70. Cummings defeated Emily Lewis in the semi-final round, while Hickman knocked off defending IHRA World Champion Troy Williams, Jr.
The win brought Cummings points total to 555 and has a chance to overtake Williams by the end of the season. “We just go in and try to win races,” he said. “Troy is a great racer and a friend. He’s the defending champ and he is not going to sit idle and let anybody catch him easily. To win it, we have to earn it.”
Cummings Motorsports is a family affair. The team includes family patriarch Larry Cummings, crew chief Dave Levatino and former IHRA World Champions Britt (Quick Rod-2003) and Slate Cummings (Super Stock-2004 and Top Dragster-1999).

“We have ten cars,” said Slate Cummings. “We use K&N Engineering Air and Oil Filters on our vehicles. “The filters never give us a problem, and with K&N Filters I’m faster and very consistent.”
In addition to Slate’s victory at Cincinnati, older brother Britt Cummings nearly matched the performance at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in Memphis. Britt Cummings made it to the fourth round of eliminations before falling just short of another final round appearance.
