K&N Utilizes In-House Vibration Stand for Hard Data to Improve Quality
Vibration testing is the shaking or shocking of an item to see how it will stand up to conditions in the real world. It is popular in the automotive industry to monitor and measure the environment vehicles experience in actual use. This real life data is recorded and then played back at levels vehicles should realistically encounter.
K&N Engineering, Inc., has a vibration stand at its headquarters in Riverside, California. “We make products that stand up to the rigors of the road,” said K&N Senior Lab Manager Rich Dwyer. “Fifteen days on our vibration stand translates into 486,000 miles.”
K&N Engineering Vibration Stand
Conducting vibration testing at K&N’s Research and Development lab provides a measurement chain that will give hard data to improve quality. When programmed, the vibration stand varies from high-frequency vibrations to low-frequency vibrations simulating real world conditions.
The vibration machine puts extreme stress on the filter. “We molded sample parts and tested ones with flaws that would never be sold,” said Dwyer. “We wanted to make sure it would not fail.”
Rough Road Simulation from Vibration Stand
Brackets that are welded to aluminum tubes for K&N Intake Kits are another item tested at K&N on the vibration stand. “We come up with preliminary ideas, and check to make sure that enough flex is built into the brackets where necessary,” said Dwyer. “If we discover fractures, we will modify our design to assure survival in the field. It’s another tool to make sure our K&N products meet the expectations of our consumers.”
