The record will always state Laura Poorter came in 2nd on June 17th at Altamont Raceway Park, expanding her USAC California Ford Focus points. But 2nd place only earned Laura a handshake, and the 17-year-old Holland native really wanted the 1st place trophy.

Laura started competing for K&N Engineering, Inc. in the Ford Focus Midget Series this year. During the 10 lap Heat Laura started in 5th place. “The guy in the 3rd car crashed and we had to do a new start,” said Laura. “In the new start I ended up 4th and then I was 3rd, it was USAC placement and a little bit of luck. I also think I drove well.”

Around the 19th lap in the 25 lap Feature the leader slid to the outside and had to leave the race. “I was equal with the 2nd place driver for a while,” she said. “We ran neck and neck but Jace Meier came in first.”

Laura drives a K&N car. “I know how my car responds now,” said Laura. “I’m finding the right levels on the car and it’s better every time I race.”

After the race she was interviewed with Jace and 3rd place winner Michael Faccinto. “I think in Dutch when I race because I’m focused,” said Laura. “After the race they were asking me questions in English and I was a little mixed up. I only wanted to say the correct words in English. People around me said I did well during the interview, but I was nervous about it.”

Laura went home to see her family in Holland, knowing she is in 7th place in the California Ford Focus Pavement Standings. She will return for the Stocktown 99 Speedway race on July 8th.

“I’ve never driven that track before,” said Laura. “It’s a bit of a disadvantage but I hope to get more than a handshake at the end of the day.”
