Funny Car Driver Phil Burkart Prepares to Win on Father's Day at K&N Filters SuperNationals
Phil Burkart is known as a steely-eyed professional with focus, intensity and motivation. The driver of the blue Checker, Schuck’s, Kragen Monte Carlo Funny Car said he is ready to narrow his mental acuity to completely concentrate on the job at hand; this weekend’s K&N Filters SuperNationals in Englishtown.
CSK Driver Phil Burkart Prepares for Englishtown
Englishtown is in New Jersey which is near Yorkville, New York, the town Phil Burkart calls home. For the CSK driver, this event is as close to a home race as he gets, and more than a few family members and friends will be making the trek down to take in the 37th annual K&N Filters SuperNationals presented by Strauss Discount Auto.
On Sunday, Burkart will be focused on racing, aiming to win rounds and potentially win the event, and he’ll be joining Americans from coast to coast as he honors his dad, on Father’s Day. Phil Burkart Sr. will be in attendance.
Burkart’s Monte Carlo continues to carry the logo, and the products, of
, the title sponsor for the Englishtown event. “Though any round win is a good one, the race wins are always terrific, taking a key associate sponsor to the Winner’s Circle with you, at the race upon which they’ve chosen to affix their name, is pretty much the ultimate,” said Team Worsham Manager Bob Wilber. “It all adds up to what can be seen as extra motivation for Phil, if that’s possible.”
“I’d like to think that I’m at 100% at all times, and I work hard to accomplish that, but there is no getting around the fact that some weekends are just a little different,” Burkart said. “To have family and friends there, and then win the race, would be something I’ve never done. I’ve won three races in my career, and the one closest to home was in Columbus. To win Englishtown, would be awesome for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that Raceway Park is one of our classic, great, historic tracks.”
Winning on Father’s Day may take the experience from “cool” to somewhere “beyond cool“, Burkart said. A lot of drag racing history has been written at Raceway Park.
“Phil’s father is the greatest influence on his life and career. His father put in him in his first drag racing car at 14, a rear-engine dragster, capable of covering the quarter-mile in 9.70 seconds at more than 140 mph,” said Wilber. “Not a bad way for a 14-year-old to get introduced to the sport.”
“Nothing would be better than to win a race near home, with my dad with me, on Father’s Day,” said Burkart. “That’s like a grand slam. My dad has raced all his life and it was a dream to drive a Nitro Funny Car professionally and to win races. We're living the dream.”
Phil Burkart at Gainesville
Another bonus for Burkart would be to support the companies that give a racer the chance to do this, said Wilber. “For Phil, going into the Winner’s Circle is always monumental, but doing so at the K&N SuperNationals would be beyond the ultimate win,” he said.
“This is our first year with K&N, and they’ve been unbelievable to us,” Burkart said. “We ran the special edition K&N car in Gainesville, and we’ve had the K&N logo on the rear window all season. They’ve stepped up to be involved with Team CSK because they believe in us, and they’ve done all they can to make us a better team. And, every time we go down the race track we’re not just taking the K&N logo along for a ride. We have a K&N filter on the car for every run, and the oil filter is a critical piece that absolutely cannot fail. They believe in us, and let me tell you that we believe in them, and their products.”
Funny Car Drivers Phil Burkart and Del Worsham will sign autographs on Nitro Alley Friday and Saturday. The racers will be at the K&N Truck and Trailer on the 16th from 1 to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Top Fuel Dragster Morgan Lucas and Super Comp Racer Lindsey will also be at the K&N Truck and Trailer to meet and greet fans at the NHRA SuperNationals sponsored by K&N Filters.
