The IHRA Ironman Classic was held at Rockingham Dragway near Hamlet, North Carolina as part of a three day Memorial Holiday Weekend Extravaganza.

Each day, the winners of the Top and Footbrake classes faced run-offs for the coveted Ironman Trophy. The weekend also marked the final point days toward qualifying for the IHRA Division 1 Summit Team Finals, and the Rockingham Dragway track championship.

Racer Michael Beard drove the Duck Tape /K&N/ Mickey Thompson backed 74 Duster 360 to 5th round finishes both Saturday and Monday. “I was part of a final group of 14,” said Beard. “It began with more than 80 cars.”

Beard’s greatest payoff came on Sunday. He drove his way through 9 rounds of competition and many of the toughest Footbrakers in the Carolinas to capture his first Footbrake Victory of 2006.

“Next on the list was facing the Top Eliminator winner, former IHRA Hot Rod World Champion, Danny Waters, Jr., in his Quick Rod dragster,” said Beard. “I got the win light, and the Ironman Trophy, by .005 seconds.”

The ¼ mile IHRA drag strip is across the street from North Carolina Speedway. There is a lot of sand and dust in the pits. “Engines cost a lot of money and I have to protect them from the dust and dirt,” said Beard. “I use K&N Engineering filters and they work. It’s a good investment and I would not protect my engines with anything other than K&N.”
