At more than 179 mph a new Land Speed Record was set at El Mirage Dry Lake
A new Land Speed Record was set at the historic El Mirage Dry Lake in California by Falkner Livingston Racing on May 6, 2006.
Paul Livingston at El Mirage Dry Lake
Rider Paul Livingston hit a top timed speed of 179.271 mph for the 750 APS/F class on a 1.3 mile course.
The team went to the event with its Team Makita Suzuki GSXR 750 to test the motorcycle for the upcoming Bonneville Speed Week event in August. Conditions were a perfect 78 degrees that day and the surface of the dry lake bed was very smooth, Paul Livingston said.
Team principal Rod Falkner was pleased with the motorcycle’s speed. “Our goal was just to take the motorcycle through tech inspection and make a shake down run at the higher desert altitudes with this engine,” said Falkner. “Although a record was not our goal, the test parameters that day allowed us to take the motorcycle up to but not to exceed 180 mph.”
Team Falkner Livingston sets new Land Speed Record
The Falkner Livingston Team Makita Suzuki GSXR 750 Motorcycle was equipped with a Nitrous Express Kit including two 2.5 nitrous bottles tucked under the motorcycle’s tail section. A rechargeable battery powered the bottle warmers used to bring the nitrous gas up to optimum operating temperatures. The team also used K&N Engineering filters on the Team Makita Suzuki.
“The K&N filters are critical to our record speeds,” said rider Livingston. “Not only are they top rated for street use, but the dry lake bed is a very demanding environment. K&N’s
high performance filters
help us to maximize the efficiency of the entire engine on the hard packed dirt.”
Livingston said their bike is built to go 200 mph and is operating perfectly. “K&N filters keep the dry lake bed’s fine dust out of the engine,” he said. “We are ready for Bonneville.”
