Racing enthusiasts can appreciate the skills that are necessary for a pit crew. In a matter of seconds they have to return a car from the pit box to the racetrack in top shape. It’s true teamwork that can make the difference between winning and losing.

Time is measured by heart beats. “You’re adrenalin is going the whole time you’re in the pit box,” said McCann Racing Crew Chief Dan Fiffick. “You see the racers zip by and only see the car for two or three seconds. Those seconds seem like hours as you wait for them to come around again. It’s really hard when they’re on the track because you can’t see the cars all the time and you constantly wonder what’s going on.”

Mike McCann of McCann Racing is the overall leader in the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Drivers point standings and Rob Foster is 7th. Foster is part of the McCann Racing Team. McCann drives his #82 McCann Plastics/K&N Filters/Dodge Viper. Foster, the top finishing rookie in the SPEED World Challenge at Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach has raced Vipers for 5 years. Fiffick said he keeps the Vipers and all his cars running great.

Fiffick has 20 years of experience working on cars. “The number one thing is safety,” he said. “When they swing the cars into the pits everything is so hot, the brakes get up to 800 degrees.” Fiffick and his crew use gloves with armed sleeves. “We’re always careful because everything we touch can burn right through the gloves.”

Fiffick uses K&N Engineering Filters on their Vipers. “I’ve also used K&N Filters on Mustangs, Corvettes, and many different kinds of trucks,” he said. “We tested the team Vipers on a dyno and noticed a 10 horsepower gain with the K&N filters.”

Mike McCann was the winner at the World Challenge Series at Sebring in March. “There’s a lot of sand at Sebring,” said Fiffick. “The K&N filter kept dirt particles and sand out of the engine. K&N makes superior products.”

The crew chief said they are working on the Vipers to get ready for the next race in May at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, in Lexington, Ohio.
