Inspiration comes from many places, and when it came to making something old new again, that inspiration came from old photographs for two Louisville, Kentucky brothers.

Jason and Jeremy Cantwell of Derby City Customs designed a special motorcycle for the K&N booth at SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) 2008. The 2009 Derby City Customs 40th Anniversary Speedster represents the 40th anniversary of K&N.

“We looked at old photographs from the 1960s and took the best aspects of those different motorcycles,” said Jeremy Cantwell. “We made a new version of those bikes with a nice clean look for the K&N booth.”

The 2009 modified bike is equipped with:

Frame: Modified Harley Davidson Frame
Forks: BUELL Inverted
Suspension: Modified Custom
Wheels: RC Components Outlaw wheels 21x3.5 front, 21x3.5 rear
Motor: Twin-Cam
Oil Filter: K&N Performance Oil Filter KN-171C
Air Intake: K&N RK-3903 Custom Air Intake Assembly
Seat: Custom with Leaf Spring Suspension
Paint: Gary Smith Custom Paint

“We wrapped the exhaust for an old school look,” said Cantwell. “There’s a skill to it. You have to wet the wrap as you put it on and keep it super tight so it wraps evenly. It takes two people to make sure it’s done right.”

It took a nearly two months for Derby City Customs to complete the build on the K&N 40th Anniversary Bike. In 2007, the brothers displayed a custom 2008 Suzuki GSX1400R Hayabusa in the K&N booth.

“The K&N anniversary bike was one of our favorites to build,” said Cantwell. “We had to think out of the box for this one.” Their next project will be a PGA Golf build motorcycle, equipped with K&N air and oil filters.
