First Formula DRIFT Victory for Vaughn Gittin Jr. at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale
Vaughn Gittin, Jr., has sealed the deal as one of the world’s top drifters by winning the final fight of the Formula DRIFT competition at Irwindale, California. Gittin made history driving his Falken Tires, Ford Racing Mustang with K&N air and oil filters by besting former champion Tanner Foust in his Nissan 350 in the final head-to-head battle.

“I was comfortable in my zone,” said Gittin. “I turned up my music and was rocking out before we left for battle on the track. During the actual competition everything seemed to move in slow motion. I knew I had the electricity for the win.”

The 2008 season was up and down for Gittin. Team Drift Alliance had a few bugs this year and a few unexplained mechanical failures, but the Formula DRIFT win was a way to put it behind them. “I’ve been on the podium multiple times,” said Gittin. “But this was my first Formula DRIFT championship.”
Gittin is sponsored by K&N. A few days before the race K&N provided track time to Gittin, Chris Forsberg, Tony Angelo, Justin Pawlak and Joon Maeng at Irwindale Speedway. “K&N gave us an edge by giving us a practice day,” said Gittin. “It was really cool and fun to go around a track I’m very familiar with.”
Gittin has used K&N products long before starting his professional career. He got his first car when he was 16-years-old and washed cars to get the money for his first K&N filter. Since then he’s used K&N on every car that he’s owned. “I read all the flow charts and realized K&N was the best for me because of the abuse I put my cars through,” he said. “When I’m in a cloud of smoke on the track, it’s not just smoke. That cloud is filled with rubber parts and without K&N filters my motors would be damaged.”
“K&N is proud to show our commitment to our sponsored racers by supplying track time,” said Tony Yorkman, K&N Sports Marketing Manager. “Vaughn sets an example by showing what K&N can achieve for his racing vehicle and for an everyday vehicle.”
Formula DRIFT is recognized as the North American profession drifting championship series. Drifting began on the streets of Japan and evolved into a worldwide competition. It challenges each racer’s driving ability as they control 200 to 600 horsepower cars while sliding sideways at high speed through a marked course.
Gittin and Forsberg have earned spots in the Red Bull Drifting World Championship at the Port of Long Beach in California on November 15-16. The Formula DRIFT drivers will face off with the top drivers in the world to compete for the biggest prize purse in drifting history.
