The long list of summer bracket races were a good choice for Peter Biondo. As the NHRA POWERade national circuit headed west, the K&N sponsored racer hit the money circuit.

One of those money races was the AA Auto Salvage Big Bucks weekend. It featured three days of quarter mile bracket action. Biondo dominated the competition at a $25,000-to-win event at Atco Raceway in New Jersey.

The Maspeth, New York resident drove his Biondo and Bertozzi Racing Race Tech Dragster to a nine round victory, which ended in the defeat of Dave Muller. In the final round Biondo used a .004 reaction and .01-over 7.470 to defeat Muller’s .031 induced 7.312 on a 7.32. Biondo never wavered on the starting line throughout the nine round AA Auto Salvage Big Bucks event.

“The car was unreal,” said Biondo after the New Jersey event. “At the 1000’ mark, it varied only .004 five runs in a row. I hit the tree well and I made some good decisions at the finish line, but the car was the story.”

A few weeks before the big win, Biondo also scored at the U.S. Open bracket race at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis and collected $10,000 with another nearly perfect .004 reaction time. He also earned $10,000 at the ultra-competitive JEGS U.S. Open Bracket Championships at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis on opening day. The next day he came in second for another $10,000. “Jeg Coughlin won that day at O'Reilly Raceway,” he said. “He is a great sportsman class racer.”

Biondo’s machine is a Race Tech Swing Arm dragster powered by a 582 cubic inch engine from Scott Duggins. “The engine is awesome,” said Biondo. “I haven’t touched a thing since I got it. The motor is a workhorse. We equipped it with K&N Engineering air and oil filters. All my engines are protected with K&N filters and I also get additional power and filtration. I wouldn’t use anything else.”

Biondo entered the 2008 racing season with a new outlook. He elected to forego the NHRA points chase in 2008. In place of NHRA Lucas Oil Division events, Biondo has filled his schedule with NHRA national events. He still competes in Super Stock and Stock Eliminator as well as Competition Eliminator. With a number of big dollar bracket events, and a handful of IHRA events to complete his schedule Biondo has more time to spend at his family business, Biondo Racing Products.

“It was an extremely hard decision to change my racing schedule,” he said. “I had the opportunity for another championship season, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices. I’m trying to have a normal life and keep the races closer to home.”

The bracket races are also very  lucrative. At nearly every event Biondo enters pays $15,000-to-win or more, and hosts some of the top racers in the country. “It’s not really about the money,” he said. “But it’s also nice to know there is money at the end of an event. Racing has been my whole life for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been competing at the highest levels for nearly two decades.”

The 37-year-old racer is a 5-time NHRA World Champion. He has won 35 NHRA National events and the granddaddy of the NHRA events, the U.S. Nationals on six separate occasions.

In the coming weeks, Biondo will attend the Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania and the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Biondo has hoisted the NHRA Wally trophy six times at each of those events. We caught up with Peter Biondo at the track.
