Modern day cowboys converged on the northern Nevada town of Ely for the Silver State Classic Challenge Nevada Open Road Challenge sponsored by K&N Engineering and Optima Battery. Ely is the type of small town where you expect to see miners ride onto the old fashioned main street with horses or mules. Instead of horses, cars of all kinds lined the streets for the Nevada Open Road Challenge schedule of events.

K&N decals and products were on almost all of the vehicles at the Silver State Challenge. More than 140 racers from the United States, Canada and Europe attended with their Vipers, Corvettes, Mercedes and other types of vehicles. The Hotel Nevada has been there since 1929. Inside, there are pictures of K&N equipped vehicles at Silver State that date back 21 years. Hotel Nevada employees along with other hotel employees throughout town were wearing shirts with the K&N logo for the three day challenge.

The first race on the schedule of events was the Speed-Stop Z2Z Challenge on Hwy 490. The road is closed to through traffic in the high desert for competitors. Drivers are pitted against the clock to see who can accelerate from a standstill to 100 mph then back to zero by braking to a halt as quickly as possible.

The acceleration distance is maxed out at one mile and allows nine-tenths of a mile for straight stopping. The winners gun for completion in 1,500 feet or less. Cars are 6,500 feet above sea level. Every car in this competition was equipped with K&N Engineering products. The drivers said they use K&N because they notice a difference in horsepower and acceleration with the air filters and the K&N oil filters protect their engines from open road debris.

K&N Engineering Chairman of the Board Jerry Mall has raced at Silver State for more than a decade. He is a previous winner of the Z2Z and came in second place this year driving the K&N Evo. Mall usually drives his K&N Viper in the Z2Z but wanted to drive the Evo.“I could have won it with a little more practice,” said Mall. “It drives different from the Viper. The Evo launches well and stops quickly.”

Mall had a full schedule at the Nevada Open Road Challenge. He was also the Grand Marshall at the Parade of Cars, along with a full schedule of racing. He participated in the High Noon Shootout and the Open Road Racing event along State Route 318.

The Silver State Classic Challenge is for people from all walks of life that pursue the dream of speed, horsepower and performance and where K&N outfits the many different types of cars with its products.
