Chris Forsberg and the NOS Energy Drink Drift Team swept the first two Formula Drift events of the year in Long Beach, California. The crew also won the Top Mechanics Award from the Air Force Reserve for their winning results. Drifting started on the mountain roads of Japan 20 years ago. Drivers control 200 to 600 horsepower cars while sliding sideways at high speeds through a marked course.

The Streets of Downtown Long Beach took place in front of a sold out crowd. Forsberg’s Nissan 350Z with K&N Engineering products ran consistent through practice and he placed third in the qualifying round. “The car was running great all morning,” said Forsberg. “I felt comfortable on the track.”

The top qualifying position put Forsberg in a great position for the top 16 tandem battles. Forsberg then pushed his way through to the top of the pack against Formula Drift veteran Conrad Grunewald, Japanese driver Kazu Hayashida and Kyle Mohan to get to the final round.

Forsberg went up against two-time Formula Drift Champion, Samuel Hubinette. After two tough rounds of competition with Hubinette, Forsberg made it to the podium for his first win of the year and his third podium in the last four consecutive events.

In the next race, Forsberg joined his Drift Alliance brothers, Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Tony Angelo for the Formula D Team Drift Challenge. The event ran in conjunction with the Grand Prix of Long Beach which drew over 180,000 spectators over three days of competition. “There is no question the K&N air filter on my 650 horsepower Ford Racing V8 enabled me to stay in the path of smoke, track debris and rubber that Chris was kicking up as we dominated the almost two mile Long Beach course lap after lap,” said Gittin.

The Drift Alliance Team ran flawlessly throughout the weekend. They had a near perfect score of 29 out of 30 and became the team to beat.

On race day they dominated the nearest competitors by over 12 points and Drift Alliance took the win. “We had a plan of what we need to do to win and stuck to it,” said Forsberg, who is now the second most winning driver in Formula Drift history. “We had a great couple of events and I’m looking forward to Atlanta and the rest of the season.”

The next round in the Formula Drift Championship will be held at the Road Atlanta race track in Braselton, Georgia on May 10.
