K&N sponsored racers Brad and Roger Lovell won the season opener in the highly competitive Pro-Mod class at the first 2008 WE-Rock rockcrawl at Perris, California. Team Lovell now leads both XRRA and the WE-rock Series.

The Lovell’s took out the other 24 entrants in the Pro-Mod class including veteran Super-Mod competitors Tracy Jordan and Jason Scherer. “My brother and I were both a bit nervous,” said Roger Lovell. “We had not pushed the new Ranger to extremes in the rocks and were unsure how it would perform.”

As the course began to get chewed up with each driver, the new Lovell vehicle remained stable and predictable throughout the race. “I never felt that I pushed it harder than I needed to,” said Lovell. “My biggest concern was our competition.”

Near the end of the first day, Brad Lovell lined up the Fabtech Ranger with K&N Engineering products for a tough climb. He pushed a front tire into the rock and the Ranger crawled to the top. As the second front tire approached, Lovell repeatedly stabbed the gas pedal in an effort to gain traction. The right amount of bounce launched the Ranger up the ledge but while Lovell stayed focused on traction and throttle, he abused the power steering pump. There was damage. “We finished the course and ran out to the pits to borrow a spare pump,” said Lovell. “We got ready for the next course with a little help from our K&N Filters pit crew.”

On day two the Lovell brothers started tied for second place.  Team Lovell had to decide whether to tackle the huge 20 point bonus ledge. “You have one chance when going down ledges,” he said. “You either land on your tires or your roof. I don’t think one driver out there wanted to do it but we knew we had to if we wanted to protect our lead. It was roughly equivalent to driving off of a house with only a bail of hay to break your fall.”

Spotter Roger lined Brad up. “I kept telling myself to trust my spotter and have faith in my suspension,” said Roger Lovell. “I went down and opened all 400 horsepower as the front tires landed. It was filthy out there but with our K&N air filter we had one less thing to worry about. We got the filtration we needed with K&N.” The rear tires contacted the ground without a bounce and Team Lovell knew they had raised the bar for everyone behind them.

Team Lovell twisted, turned and climbed their way through the rest of the courses and widened their first place lead to 26 points. They were the only Pro-Mod team to work their vehicle between the gates and finish.  The next stop for the Lovell brothers is XRRA Round 2 in Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 3.
