The 30th edition of the Dakar Rally is expected to be longer and harder than ever. The race will cross Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. For the first time in the history of the Dakar, the cars and trucks will follow a separate route from the bikes. There will also be no assistance available for three stages of the race and this change is expected to make a huge difference in the final results.

K&N Engineering is sponsoring the Vicking Dakar Team. “They use a VW Tarek,” said Patrick Jacobs of K&N Filters in Europe. “This was VW’s factory Dakar car. We sponsored them in 2007, when they also used an Audi Q7 as a technical assistance car. This year, the Q7 will run the Dakar again with K&N filters.”

The Tarek Buggy is also equipped with K&N filters. “The team wants to race the best filters money can buy,” said Jacobs. “Since the buggy is a former factory car the setup is very reliable.”

Driver Michel de Groot and his navigator Erik van Loon are ready for the start in Lisbon on January 5. “Michel has a lot of Dakar experience,” said Jacobs. “He has raced in the Dakar with bikes, and is happy to try something new with the buggy for 2008. Erik always wanted to race the Dakar, and when he heard Michel would drive the buggy, he wanted to navigate.”

Dakar is about competing in the desert through very difficult stages and  various terrains. Just one mistake can end the race. “Driving is in their blood,” said Jacobs. “They are ready for this race and expect to make it to the end on January 20th at Dakar.”
