Figspeed Provides K&N Products and More at NHRA Sportsman Races

Les Figueroa loves racing — the adrenaline, the excitement, the wins. But he leaves the driver’s seat to help other drivers, and he finds this the most rewarding.  Through his company, Figueroa Motorsports or “Figspeed", Figueroa and his crew travel across the country providing parts and service to racers.

“As many hours as I work, I might be better off doing something different to make money,” Figueroa said.  “But for every sportsman racer — even if it’s just a little — we are really helping someone who is having a difficult time, someone who would not be able to race.”

Figspeed, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, contracts with 10 companies to carry dragster parts, selling them from a trailer at the race track. The team also provides technical support, troubleshooting and part testing at no cost for all sportsman classes of the National Hot Rod Association, Figueroa said.

The extensive cost of spare parts and space in a driver’s race trailer prohibits most sportsman racers from having everything on hand in case of a racing emergency or mishap.  The Figspeed modified 33-foot Freightliner pulls into several NHRA national events — and some divisional events — with parts from Auto Meter, Aeromotive, B&M, Borla, CSR, Dedenbear, Hurst, MSD, Moser, McLeod, Ron Davis Products, Painless Wiring and XRP.

“We have a trailer full of spare parts — fuel systems, braided line fittings, wiring axles, brakes and on and on,” Figueroa said. “And they’re all in stock.”  Although not contracted with K&N Filters, Figspeed stocks K&N parts he knows racers will need. “K&N has great products used by most every racer,” Figueroa said. “K&N oil and air filters are just a natural at races. K&N is a big part of sportsman racing.”

“We have a rapport with sportsman racers,” he continued. “They’ve come to rely on us at races. We are the only source. I wonder what they’d do if we’re not there.”

Figueroa holds 12 NHRA Wally Trophies as a driver. He got his start in the sport from his father, who raced locally. In addition to his Figspeed responsibilities, Figueroa races Super Comp and Top Dragster using K&N products. He also uses K&N products on his Chevy S-10 shop truck and would use them for his Freightliner, if the company made them, he said.

Prior to Figspeed, Figueroa serviced racers for nine years at the tracks for Mallory Ignition, where he saw the need for a sportsman-based trailer support program. Just as the sportsman racers lack resources, many parts companies do not have the resources to attend sportsman-only events. He started Figspeed in 1997, and the business has spread by word of mouth.

Figueroa and Figspeed make a difference at every race — “every single race,” Figueroa said. “We’ve helped pros make it to the next round. We’ve helped sportsman who would never be able to finish make it to the second round or the final race.
