With one move in the fourth heat race the defending World of Outlaws champion set up his entire night in Saturday’s inaugural Dave Helm Memorial. Schatz raced his Global ParkerStore/Tom Johnson Camping Center No. 15 J&J with K&N Engineering products past Terry McCarl with only two laps remaining to claim the runner-up spot in the heat race.

Schatz also earned a spot in the Crane Cams Dash, on a night when track position meant everything. In the feature, he started on the pole and led all 35 laps to capture his 19th win of the season.

“By no means was this an easy night for us,” said Schatz. “We qualified in the perfect spot and things worked our way in the heat. The track was really demanding with all the rain. I felt like I may have had something going wrong late in the race, but fortunately my crew gave me a great car.”

Schatz qualified fourth in the field and started the fourth heat race in the fourth position. He had a good start and battled Terry McCarl lap after lap to make the bottom groove of the oval work. Late in the heat, McCarl moved down and Schatz took a chance on the higher groove and it worked. In the Crane Cams Dash he beat Ronnie Day to win his 12th dash of the season.

In the feature, the competitors were all trying for the bottom line. Schatz jumped out into the lead at the start and set off a fast pace. His victory coupled with Joey Saldana’s ninth place finish allowed Schatz to increase his lead by more than 100 markers on Saturday night.

“We worry about wins, but it’s a lot of fun to have someone pushing you,” said Schatz. “To go down to the wire with a great driver like Joey Saldana is exciting. With only four nights of racing left I just hope we can reward the hard work of our crew with a championship. We have a winning combination because we work with some of the best manufacturers in the motorsports industry. Our K&N Engineering Carbon Fiber Airbox helps us achieve maximum horsepower at every race.”

Schatz and the ParkerStore team will be back in action on Friday night at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona. On Saturday, the team returns to Perris Auto Speedway in California for the first World of Outlaws race at the track since 2004.
