The San Diego, California event in the series was huge for Johnson. “I was going 84.6 mph on the GPS system,” said Johnson. “If I get caught going over 85 mph any time during a race I get last place in the event. At San Diego, we hit the corners at 82 mph because the water is flat and the corners are long sweepers.”

Most of Johnson’s courses contain 90 degree turns with long straight-aways. San Diego is a 2.5 mile oval, and Johnson ran it completely different from his normal cornering speeds of 67-75 mph. “This was a whole new kind of racing for us,” he said. “Instead of a long rough endurance race we were on a short sprint course.”

The boats run tighter and are in a tight pack at San Diego. “It was very exciting,” he said. “We were running with a lot of boats that are normally in front of us. It was really cool to run one race right after the next all weekend.”

Johnson uses K&N Engineering products. “This is the sixth race on my GM 509 running a Whipple 330 supercharger,” he said. “I know that my K&N oil filter is working well because I am still running the same oil pressure I was five races ago.”

This weekend Johnson heads to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri for the Offshore Super Series Nationals. He will be there in official capacity as the Pacific Offshore Chief Inspector.
