Michael Beard, of the Duck Tape Racing Team went to Carolina Dragway facing both a challenge and an opportunity. The final stop on the IHRA Summit Pro-AM Tour Division 2 Stock Championship was a do-or-die situation. Beard had to make one final round appearance in order to beat the top contenders.

He qualified in the top half of the field on Saturday, survived the first four rounds of completion and clinched the IHRA Division 2 Stock Championship. On Sunday, Beard beat the competition for his second first place victory of the weekend.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Beard. “Carolina Dragway has been very good to me. I hoped that I could pull it off, but anything can happen in any give round. We didn’t finish Saturday’s race until 3 a.m. We only had five hours of sleep but we got up and did it again. I was tickled to death to clinch the Division Championship, so anything on Sunday was gravy.”

Beard’s additional points from Sunday puts him two rounds away from the national lead for the IHRA World Championship. The double victory at Carolina Dragway marked Beard’s seventh win of the season out of eleven final round appearances and his third IHRA Ironman trophy of the season.

Beard’s 1980 Plymouth Volare is powered by a Mopar 360 Magnum crate motor, tipping the scales at 3600 pounds to run in the J/CM (Crate Motor) class in stock eliminator. “We use K&N oil filters, K&N air filters and K&N valve breather covers,” said Beard. “I’m so happy to be able to win a Division Championship for Duck Tape and K&N Filters. I hope we can win another World Championship for them, too.”

Beard is on his way to the Alabama International Dragway for the IHRA Bracket Finals.
