The American Honda off-road racing team has a long standing relationship with
K&N Engineering.
Nine-time Baja 1000 Champion, Johnny Campbell
The team has several different bikes to choose from depending on the type
of off-road racing event. The Honda CRF450R is a liquid-cooled four-stroke
four-valve cylinder head 449cc that produces 120 horsepower per liter in a 65
pound engine. The electric start CRF450X is tuned for trail duty with more
torque, wider gear ratios and more suspension. There is an all new engine design
in the CR250R, with a reshaped cylinder, revised carb settings, new throttle
position sensor and an all new retooled aluminum frame.
Johnny Campbell is the racing team coordinator and a back-up racer. He is most
famous for his success in the Baja 1000, (nine victories in a row). For more
than a decade Campbell has been a top desert racer. He will be doing less riding
for Honda in 2006 and more managerial duties.
“The team faces everything from high speed open-desert racing to pine forests in
the mountains,” said Campbell. “We noticed the K&N filter does not clog up in a wide variety of terrain.”
If you were to stretch the pleated material out on our K&N filter there would 2
to 3 times more surface area for filtering dust and dirt. “This means you can go
2 to 3 times longer with this filter,” said K&N Powersports Brand Manager Johnny
Jump. “In a long off road race this can make a difference.”

American Honda plans to compete this year in a grueling 24-hour race at
Glen Helen Raceway Park in Devore, California. “The K&N filter meets our needs
with performance and durability,” said Campbell. “It is also easier to remove
and replace than a stock-type race filter.”
Last year the team clocked off 77 nine-mile laps at Glen Helen aboard their
Honda CRF450X in the event’s 24-hour period to win the 40+ Expert Class. Of the
75 teams entered, the six-man American Honda squad finished 8th overall, just 30
seconds out of 6th place.
