K&N Automotive Air Filters for Just About Every Vehicle On and Off the Road
K&N is a leading manufacturer of high flow automotive air filters, designed for the automobile enthusiast interested in maximizing horsepower and acceleration. We design and manufacture several million high-flow automotive air filters each and every year.
K&N automobile air filters are designed to achieve high, virtually unrestricted air flow while maintaining filtration levels critical to ensure long engine life. Thousands of these air filters have been made specifically for passenger vehicles on and off the road and can be found in most of the larger auto part stores.
K&N Automotive Air Filters
At K&N, our goal is to design automotive filters with the maximum possible airflow achievable while providing outstanding engine protection. We take automotive filtration very seriously.
Our air filter media has been tested both in-house and by independent labs. In addition we test many of our automotive air filters in and out of the factory air box ensuring proper fit and function.
K&N High-Flow Automobile Air Filter
Our premium automotive air filters were created for an environment requiring maximum horsepower and enhanced acceleration in addition to protection from the dirt and debris that can damage your automobile. The simple result was an air filter that allows dramatically more air into your engine, is washable, reusable, and will protect your engine for the life of your vehicle.
Facts You Should Know About Automotive Air Filters
We believe the primary function of an automotive air filter is to deliver both high airflow and superior dirt protection.
We design our automotive filters to provide minimum restriction allowing high airflow into an engine. In the vast majority of cases, the increased airflow, produced by our automobile filters, will also increase engine performance which is measured by horsepower and torque.

The automotive performance benefits of maximum airflow are very clear, compelling and well documented. This is why so many professional racers are willing to run expensive vehicles with no air filter, as opposed to installing a disposable air filter. They are seeking the additional horsepower and throttle response needed to win the race. Both air flow and dirt protection are critical to engine performance. For this reason a consumer should always evaluate an automotive air filter based on both its filtration efficiency and air flow capabilities.
Automotive Air Filter Testing
Independent Laboratory Testing for K&N Air Filters
In order to verify that our automotive filters maintain filtration levels necessary to protect your engine, we test our filtering media through independent laboratories. The testing procedure used in the past was the SAE J726 air filter test procedure established by the Society of Automotive Engineers; however this procedure was recently superseded by testing procedure ISO 5011.
We have included a detailed example of test results using the SAE J726 procedure. These results are for two individual air filters that each demonstrated among the highest overall filtration level we have achieved with our media. Paper Air Filters vs K&N Automobile Air Filters
To meet minimum filtration standards, paper automotive air filters must be thick and/or the fibers must be tightly compressed and dense. Therefore paper elements that provide adequate filtration are more restrictive to air flow by design. Additionally, as a paper filter becomes more and more clogged, the pressure inside the filter drops while the atmospheric air pressure (approximately 14.7 psi at sea level) outside the filter remains the same. It's like using your lungs to draw the air out of a plastic milk bottle.
When the pressure differential becomes too great, the bottle will collapse. The same thing could happen to your paper automotive filter, although it is unlikely. An excessively high pressure differential created by a restricted filter can literally pull dirt particles through the paper medium. In other words, the performance of a paper filter, i.e. air flow through the filter and its ability to protect your engine, decreases near the end of its service interval.
K&N's automobile air filters are somewhat more complex than the paper filter. The unique design features multiple layers of oiled cotton fabric which captures the airborne dirt particles. These dirt particles cling to the fibers of the filter and actually become part of the filtering media. This process, known as depth loading, allows the K&N automotive air filter to retain significantly more dirt per square inch than a paper filter.
The cotton fabric is sandwiched between pleated aluminum screens. Pleating the air filter element increases surface area which in turn prolongs service intervals.
K&N Automotive Air Filter Media
The dirt particles collected on the surface of a K&N element have little effect on air flow during much of its service life because there are no small holes to clog. Particles are stopped by layers of crisscrossed cotton fibers and held in suspension by the oil. As the filter begins to collect debris, an additional form of filter action begins to take place because air must first pass through the dirt particles trapped on the surface. This means that a K&N automotive filter continues to exhibit high air flow throughout the life of the filter while it is accumulating dirt. At the same time, the air flow for an average paper air filter can decrease dramatically as the paper element gets dirty. So, you can be assured a K&N automotive air filter will provide dramatically more air flow which can enhance engine performance.
K&N's Washable and Reusable Automotive Air Filter
All of our automotive air filters are washable and reusable. They can be easily cleaned and oiled using our K&N cleaning kits. In our testing laboratory, we have washed and re-oiled one K&N automobile filter more than 100 times and it still performed up to specification. We recommend you check your air filter every 30,000 miles, however, under most street conditions the filter will not require cleaning until 50,000 miles of continuous use.
Automotive Air Filter Warranty
All K&N OE replacement air filters for the automotive industry are warranted against defective materials or workmanship for one million miles. This warranty applies to any K&N automotive air filter listed in our catalog or on our web site as an OE replacement air filter with a cross reference to a specific vehicle or motorcycle; except for those air filters sold for use on ATV's and motorcycles designed for dual purpose and/or off-road use.
