These commercial grade air filters are built from a new hybrid filter medium that incorporates some of the best characteristics of both cotton and synthetic non-woven technologies. They do not require any oil treatment and use a 3-D lofted filter surface to help reduce air filter restriction. Less restriction means more power and better engine efficiency. As air filter restriction goes up, an engine needs to expend energy "pulling" air through the filter. This is wasted energy that is no longer available for power at the wheels. Another air flow benefit with K&N HD air filters is that each time the air filter is washed, restriction is reduced whereas disposable air filters slowly increase in restriction throughout their service life.

Our heavy duty air filters are built tough with extra strength and reinforcement to ensure they will keep going for up to 300,000 miles. The Hybrid filter medium is comprised of a thick "lofted" non-woven synthetic media that is co-pleated between 2 layers of powder-coated aluminum screen wire. This reinforced medium is then held between either molded urethane (top or bottom) or between steel top and bottom plates and surrounded by a powder-coated steel cage to help withstand the extreme temperatures and pressures that can be present in large turbo diesel applications.

After you apply our special degreaser, you can use pressure washers, compressed air, or water hose nozzles to clean the dirt and grime out of the filter. A Washable Heavy Duty Air Filter
K&N has developed a line of washable commercial grade air filters designed specifically for large turbo diesel engines, class 6-8 over-the-road trucks, agricultural and earth moving equipment, and diesel motorhomes. Built with the unique characteristics of turbo diesel engines in mind, these air filters do not require the use of oil and can be easily cleaned with power sprayers or commercial parts washers. The filters are also designed to provide lower restriction and higher air flow, while delivering exceptional filtration efficiency, and extended service lives.

Washable and Reusable
K&N HD air filters can be easily cleaned and reused to reduce the cost of replacing air filters. These "depth-loading" air filters feature our washable "lofted" hybrid air filtration medium. They do not require any oil and are robust enough to be cleaned with pressure washers and standard truck washing equipment. Most other heavy duty air filters are built into the canister as a complete non-serviceable unit; the filter and canister must be replaced dirty at the end of a single service interval. A K&N reusable HD filter will reduce the cost of buying disposable filters and canisters over and over. Perhaps even better, when restriction builds beyond a desired level, just wash the filter. So instead of short cycling expensive disposable air filters, keep restriction down and horsepower up with K&N.


Hybrid Filtration Medium

Our Hybrid Air Filtration medium is a non-woven synthetic material designed to be used dry with no oil required. Many non-woven mediums have a two-dimensional or "flat" surface. Our Hybrid filter media is comprised of lofted non-woven synthetic fibers. This three dimensional platform adds a depth loading feature we adopted from our cotton air filters. Depth loading gives an air filter high airflow / low restriction while providing large dust holding capacities. These design choices we made specifically for the conditions encountered in heavy duty turbo diesel applications. We wanted a low restriction air filter that could be cleaned almost anywhere and in anyway.

Tried and Tested
Each commercial grade diesel air filter design is tested with Fine Grade Test Dust using the ISO 5011 air filtration test protocol to determine filtering efficiency and dust holding capacity. K&N commercial grade air filters are designed to protect vital engine components even after the filter has been cleaned multiple times.

Tech Talk

All HD filters start with "38" and have either an "S" or "R" suffix
The 38 signifies the filter is a K&N HD air filter. The "S" and "R" at the end of the part number (i.e. 38-2001S or 38-2001R) signifies which way the air flows through the media. A filter with the "S" suffix, should be red on the outside and white on the inside, flowing the air from the outside inward, aka Standard. Whereas the "R" suffix filters, which should be white on the outside, will flow air from the inside outward, aka Reversed. The red color is to signify the direction of air flow because the media is designed to flow in one direction. K&N does not recommend using the filter to flow air in the opposite direction than designed.

Note: The hybrid media is designed to flow in one direction. Currently the red side of the media is the dirty side and will be fuzzier than the clean side. The dirty or red side is also known as the lofted side. Flowing air in the opposite direction (from the clean/white side first) can cause this side of the media to clog quickly. This process is called "surface loading," rather than "depth loading" as the filter was designed.

90 degree flange Canisters

The 90 degree flange Canisters, also known as Housing Filters, consists of a housing that comes apart and has a removable air filter cartage. One major benefit of the K&N canister filter is that it can come apart so the filter can be serviced; whereas the OEM air filter housing normally does not come apart, meaning the entire assembly must be replaced. These filters will have a base flange that can be either rubber or metal. The side flange will have either Inlet or Outlet printed next to it signifying the air flow direction at that opening. For example; if the side flange says inlet, this is where the air comes into the filter; see picture to the side. These filters will also have a rubber o-ring seal to seal the canister to the base of the filter.

K&N 38 series filters can have part numbers ending with either an S or R to indicate the direction of air flow. The S signifies the air flows in a STANDARD direction and an R indicates the air flows in a REVERSE direction. In an S filter the air flows through the filter media and then exits through the base of the filter. When an S filter is in a canister, the air flows INTO the side flange (noted on the canister as inlet). In an R filter the air flows up from the base and exits through the filter media, so that the ‘dirty’ side is actually inside the filter. When an R filter is in a canister then the air flows out through the side flange (noted on the canister as outlet). The OEM calls a filter this size an ECO II style filter.

The flow-through canister filters are designed to flow air in through the top, through the filter from the outside and then out through the bottom. All Flow-through canister part numbers end with the letter "S" for standard flow.

K&N Radial Seal Air Filters

The Radial seal filters seal to a tube inside the air filter housing. They only touch the tube and seals to the inside edge of the air filter and not the bottom. Here is a picture of the sealing edge.

Interior S MediaThe radial seal filters have a rubber flange that fits over the inlet tube. These filters press fit over the tube, holding it in place. The filter will seal to the tube against the inner lip of the filter’s flange and not the base. Part numbers that end with the letter "S" is our standard flow filters. Part numbers ending with "R" indicates the air flows in a reverse direction.
